Questions parents ask
Here’s what the show is, whether it’s right for your child’s age, why it’s audio instead of a screen, and quick answers to the questions parents ask most.
What it is
Nighttime Nathan is a weekly story podcast. In every episode, Nathan and his best friend Peanut Butter Jim, a talking peanut, visit somewhere new in the nighttime universe, like a kingdom made of breakfast, a pirate ship or the moon’s only amusement park. Along the way Nathan works through something real: being brave, feeling nervous, sharing, trying again.
Episodes run ten to twenty minutes, each one stands on its own so you can start anywhere, and every story ends with an original song.
Is it right for my child?
The show is written for kids ages 3 to 10 and is at its best there, but it’s fun for anyone. A lot of parents tell us they like it too.
Choose the age closest to your child’s below for a curated list of episodes they might like best.
- 4 year-olds At four, kids are here for the songs and the silly characters, and the plot barely matters. These five episodes are fun even if nobody follows the story. 5 episodes to try first
- 5 year-olds Five is the age the show fits best. A five-year-old can follow a whole story and still wants a talking peanut in it. 5 episodes to try first
- 6 year-olds At six, kids start to care about fairness, about being good at things, and about what other kids think. These five episodes are about exactly that. 5 episodes to try first
- 7+ year-olds By seven, preschool story shows feel too young, and shows for older kids can get genuinely scary. These five episodes have full plots with nothing frightening in them, and they work well past seven. 5 episodes to try first
Why audio
With nothing to look at, kids make the pictures themselves. A story also works in places a screen doesn’t: in the bath, in a dark room at bedtime, in the back seat of the car. And once an episode is downloaded, it plays with no wifi at all.
