Why these ten
Between them these ten visit eleven different worlds and introduce most of the characters who keep turning up afterwards — Bubblebeard and the crew of the Wooden Parrot, the Grumpus, King Henry the Rex, Queen Lactose, Sensei Jonko and the ninja apes. If you listen to all ten you have effectively been given the map.
They are also in an order, and it is a deliberate one: the pirates first because that is the episode that most reliably gets a four-year-old to sit down, then outward through the woods, the bayou and the valley. That said, every episode is self-contained and ends with its own song, so nothing breaks if you start at number seven because it has a dragon in it.
