Why kids love Dino Beach
Dino Beach is the sunniest corner of the nighttime universe: a volcano island where stegosauruses play volleyball on the sand, pterodactyls run the sky, and nobody has ever heard of being extinct. It is ruled by King Henry the Rex, who is enormous, extremely loud, and — the first time Nathan meets him — quite rude about it.
Terry Dactyl is the friend who shows Nathan around, and Queen Gloria is the one who finally explains what is really going on with the king. What makes Dino Beach work for younger listeners is that the dinosaurs are never the danger. The tension in these stories is always social — someone is being unkind, or nervous, or too proud to say sorry — and the dinosaurs are just the enormous, toothy, hilarious way in.
Kids who arrive for T. rexes stay for the part where the mean king turns out to be lonely.
