A cast that is mostly not people
Nathan's best friend is a talking peanut, so the bar for who counts as a person was never especially high. The nighttime universe is populated by a freshwater narwhal who runs a music festival, a Canadian moose with strong opinions about soup, a mammoth called Randy, a turtle named Lance who is in no hurry, an otter who organises the sea race, a ferret who reads the maps on a pirate ship, and a ladybug who runs a theatre out of a spider's web.
Animals are the shortest route into a story for a young listener — a kid who will not sit still for a story about a boy will sit very still indeed for a story about a narwhal — and once they are in, the story is about the same things it was always about.
