Spooky, and then not
There is a specific age — roughly four to seven — where a child wants the spooky thing very badly and then cannot sleep. These episodes are built for exactly that. The Spooky Woods of Lake Alele are full of creaks and shadows and rustling branches, and every one of them turns out to be a friendly animal doing something ordinary.
The Spookylooper of Monster Valley starts with Nathan waking from a bad dream and unable to get back to sleep, and ends somewhere much gentler. Monster Valley itself is a place where every monster is invited to the dance. The structure is always the same and it is the whole promise: the scary thing is real, it is investigated, and it is not scary.
Nothing jumps out, and nothing is left unresolved at the end of the episode.
